About Mr. C.

I’ve been a classroom teacher since 2003, but have only been at GWA since 2017.  In the 14 years prior to GWA I taught at two middle schools and four universities.  I love being a teacher and I love being in 5th grade at GWA!  When I’m not in the classroom I like to spend my time at home with my amazing wife and four incredible children.

As an educational researcher and learning scientist I have published several academic papers in national and international journals.  I am the founder for the online Journal on Best Teaching Practices and served as the managing editor of that publication from 2013-16.  I also do some sports writing and my work has been featured in the Deseret News, ESPN 960, The Huffington Post, BuzzFeed, The Sports Column and more.  I am the founder and managing editor of D1 Recruiting and BYU Insider.  Finally, as a writer I have published two books: How to Get FREE Stuff with Online Product Reviews and Contacting College Coaches, and have two more books near completion (see book section of website for further info and release dates).

In addition to teaching 5th graders I also like to teach others, so I’m the host of two podcasts (After the Run and Virtual School Assembly) and have a bunch of YouTube channels, including: Happiness Built, Reviews of Cool Stuff, After the Run, Virtual School Assembly, Elementary Teacher Tips, Level 6 Math, and my Tyler Christensen speaker page.

People are usually interested to know that I lost 100 pounds and ran a 52.4 mile ultramarathon (here’s a before and after video), than my son bought and is restoring his dream car (here’s his YouTube channel), and that I like to sing and play piano and guitar (here’s me singing with my kids).  I also like to do home improvement projects, love retro video games and 80s pop culture, and approve of chocolate covered cinnamon bears, grapefruit, and almond roca.

Over COVID I interviewed 100+ celebrities and helped them share their stories with students on Virtual School Assembly.  Since then I’ve had a few stories of my own to share, so I’ve given talks at TEDxDoughteryValley (California), TEDxUoSM (Malaysia), and TEDxDemontfortU (England).  I have upcoming TEDx talks scheduled in California and Australia.  I really enjoy public speaking and hope to do a lot more of it in the future.
